Renewals and riders

Keep your bonds current, change the bond when the underlying obligation changes.

How does surety bond renewal work?

Most license and permit bonds renew annually: the surety re-quotes the premium on the same basis as the original placement and files a continuation certificate with the obligee on or before the renewal date. NMLS Electronic Surety Bonds renew through NMLS on the licensee's cycle, while court and contract bonds typically run to completion instead of renewing.

  • We track every bond we write and reach out 45 days before expiration.
  • Renewal premium quoted on the same basis as the original placement.
  • Continuation certificates filed with the obligee on or before the renewal date.

Riders

A rider amends an existing bond without cancelling and replacing it. Common reasons:

  • Change in the principal's legal name or DBA
  • Change in bond amount because the obligee raised the requirement
  • Change in the obligee (most often a regulator reorganization)
  • Address or contact update for the named insured

Riders typically issue within 1 to 2 business days. Some obligees require the carrier to re-execute the original bond rather than accepting a rider; we handle that on your behalf.
