Surety Bond Cost Index

What surety bonds cost, by bond type and state. Bond amounts come from state statute; premium ranges come from our own quote and application data plus published market rates.

Quick answer

Surety bond premiums run about 1% to 15% of the bond amount per year. The bond amount itself is set by the state or obligee, not the surety: across the bonds and states in this index, statutory amounts range from a few thousand dollars to several hundred thousand. Standard credit lands near the low end of the rate band; below-standard credit toward the high end. Final premium is set by underwriting.

Data as of 2026-06-17. Methodology v1. 52 states across 7 bond types with published statutory amounts.

How we built this

Bond amounts are statutory: each state, court, or obligee sets the required amount, so those figures are sourced from our maintained state-law dataset, not estimated. The premium is what you pay to be bonded, charged as a percentage of the bond amount and set by underwriting.

Premium-rate bands (1% to 15% of the bond amount per year, depending on credit) reflect typical Cornerstone Surety market rates. Where we have enough of our own quote and application data for a given bond and state, we publish a proprietary aggregate range instead. We only publish an aggregate cell once it covers at least 25 records, and we publish ranges only, never an individual quote or any customer figure.

These are estimated ranges, not quotes. Final premium is set by underwriting and depends on the bond amount, your credit and financials, the bond class, and the obligee. A firm number takes a short application.
