Licensing
FDCPA
The federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. It governs how third-party collectors may contact consumers, on top of state collection licensing.
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is the federal law that governs how third-party debt collectors may contact and treat consumers. It sets nationwide conduct rules on top of any state license.
Holding a collection license does not exempt a business from the FDCPA, and many states layer their own collection statutes as well. Compliance means satisfying federal conduct rules and state licensing at the same time.
